Used Shipping Container Hire

SEA Containers offer an extensive range of used shipping containers for hire. Second-hand containers are a great solution for additional robust, secure and vermin-proof self-storage space. With depots across the North Island and South Island of New Zealand, we can efficiently deliver containers to your home or business.

Types of used containers for hire

Refrigerated

A refrigerated container, also known as a ‘reefer’, operates between –20 °C and +18 °C. These shipping containers for hire are ideal transport and storage solutions for temperature-sensitive items such as food and beverages.

High Cube

High-cube containers make great selfstorage solutions, pop-up shops and on-site offices. These high capacity units feature an extra foot of height ideal for transport or storage of extra-tall equipment.

Insulated

Insulated storage containers are wind and watertight and are ideal for transporting goods which need to be stored at a consistent ambient temperature.

Flat Rack

Flat-rack storage containers feature reinforced floors to support heavy freight such as machinery or vehicles. These containers have no roof with options for two rigid or collapsible walls.

Dangerous Goods

Dangerous goods shipping containers ensure the safe containment of hazardous materials, such as gas bottles, chemicals, fertilisers, petroleum and paint thinners.

Side Opening

Side-opening containers allow for easier access to load and unload heavy and bulky goods. These containers are an excellent choice for container modification due to their versatility.

Open Top

Open-top shipping containers are perfect for the transportation and storage of heavy machinery and equipment. Roof bows secure the removable tarpaulin roof, and end doors allow easy access to cargo.

Grades

We grade our containers for sale and hire in three ways – near new A, B and C grades.

Grade B

‘B grade’ containers have been previously used for shipping goods around the world. These containers are structurally sound and in good overall condition and may contain minor dents, dings, light surface rust and signs of repair work. However, they are 100% watertight and windproof.

We can also modify your unit with a lockbox, doors and windows. In addition, we can fit our B grade shipping containers with CSC plates, which are valid for 12 months and may be extended.

Grade C

Our C grade units may display considerable signs of wear, including dents, external surface rust and repair. C grade shipping containers are cost-effective and ideal for farm and business uses such as self-storage of machinery and industrial equipment. They are also guaranteed 100% wind and waterproof upon delivery. Modifications can include painting or installing a lockbox at our customers’ request.

Container Safety Convention (CSC) Certified Used Containers

Valid Container Safety Convention (CSC) plates are required for any shipping container used for ocean transport. All new storage containers receive a CSC plate valid for five years. Once this period expires, SEA Containers can extend this by a maximum of 30 months from the inspection date.

Container Sizes

20ft

20ft units are the standard shipping container size for transportation. Commonly used to ship equipment internationally and domestically, store excess household items or create a temporary office.

40ft

40ft used shipping containers suit a wide range of functions, including conversion projects, transportation and storage of farming equipment, vehicles and cargo.

Should I hire or buy a container

Whether it will be better for you to hire a container or buy a container depends on what you plan to use it for.

It may be the best option to hire a shipping container if you plan to use it for:

  • Self-storage of temporary or seasonal items
  • Events and festivals
  • One-off shipping

It may be better to purchase a shipping container if you plan to use it for:

  • Secure storage of items long-term
  • Modification of living or working situations
  • Regularly transporting cargo
