6 Ways to Keep Your Shipping Container in Tip-Top Shape

Thursday, November 03, 2016

“A small leak can sink a great ship.” – Benjamin Franklin.

Shipping containers are designed and built to withstand a long, tough life of carrying heavy loads of cargo. These units are commonly constructed of steel, and preventative measures are taken to avoid corrosion. However, as with many things, maintenance and repair are essential and helps to prolong the life of the container. ,

Containers are exposed to corrosive salt air, knocked about when packed and stacked on ships, trains and trucks, causing some damage. It is imperative that you inspect, maintain and repair your containers, twice a year at least.

Here are a few recommendations on how to keep your containers in good nick:

1.Roof maintenance and repair

First and foremost do an inspection of your roof. Recycled containers often suffer damage from being stacked on top one another resulting in dents and chipped paint causing it to retain moisture which causes corrosion and deterioration. Safeguard against corrosion by repairing dents, and using good quality marine paint.

2.Assess, remove and treat rust

It is a misnomer that shipping containers do not succumb to rust and rot. While corten steel is high-quality steel, the wear and tear, does take its toll. Corten steel is resistant to corrosion but not rust proof, therefore require repair and maintenance. It is not such an arduous task. Ensure that you remove the rust, any openings to be sealed, and painted with high-quality marine paint to get more life out of your containers.

3.Inspect, lubricate and repair doors

Shipping containers have heavy duty rubber door seals. However, they do succumb to damage due to wear and tear. Check whether doors are completely sealed. Keep them free from grit and replace them if you notice any cracks. You should regularly inspect the moving parts of the door for any damage due to repeated use. Ensure that they are operational and secure. Keep door hinges, locks and seals clean by removing dirt and rust, then use lubricating spray. Container doors last for approximately 10-15 years before they perish.

4.Secure container on a level surface

Make sure that you install your container on a level, well-drained surface. It prevents water from accumulating and moisture building up, causing corrosion under the container.

5.Examine container modifications

Shipping containers are designed and constructed to resist corrosion and to be water tight. However, it does present challenges when it has been modified in diverse ways and structures, particularly when it is a recycled container. Examine the modified parts of the container, specifically where the steel is joined. See that it is clean and rust free. Repair any rust and clean any debris and treat it with the latest rust proof paint.

6.Maintenance checks on Refrigeration Unit

You will require periodic maintenance if your container is a refrigerated or ‘reefer container.’ Occasional servicing will prohibit unexpected downtime due to repairs necessary at inopportune times. It is best that this type of maintenance is carried out by a qualified technician.

Why you should buy Shipping Containers

Wednesday, September 21, 2016

Whatever the reason you are considering purchasing a shipping container, whether it be for personal or business purposes, it is a cost-effective method to install a secure, mobile unit on a construction site, at your business place, in your yard or for any other purpose for that matter. Let’s explore the reasons why you should buy shipping containers.

  • Depending on your location, purchasing a new shipping container is a breeze, especially with a reputable company like SEA Containers NZ who have branches nationwide.
  • If you don’t want to spend exorbitant costs or your business is on a tight budget, you can buy used shipping containers and can achieve huge savings. While the quality is not the same of a new container, it can be utilised for storage and transport purposes.
  • Be aware that not all shipping containers are constructed of the same material. Opt for those made from corten steel. These will last longer and can endure catastrophic weather conditions. Bear in mind that shipping containers are designed to transport cargo across the oceans while being exposed to the corrosive salt air.
  • Purchase containers that have been graded to ensure that you obtain a unit that is secure, and suited to your requirements, especially if needed for long term use.
  • There are millions of unused shipping containers stacked in ports and shipping yards around the world that are now being put to good use. You can contribute in a small but notable way by buying these recycled containers and creating eco-friendly alternatives for these modified containers.
  • There is an increasing trend to use shipping containers as mobile farming. Many cities are becoming over populated, and access to land is becoming more difficult. Making it more attainable for city dwellers to get wholesome, fresh foods. Weather conditions do not affect the harvesting of fresh produce.
  • If you purchase a container instead of leasing one, it does not mean money down the drain. Companies are always on the lookout for good quality containers for storage and transport purposes. They are durable and robust and designed to withstand a tough life carrying cargo for over 20 years. Hence, if you no longer require the containers, you are assured that they have good trade value over time.
  • Investing in shipping containers gives you peace of mind when constructing a home, or a site office, small studio, etc., especially in areas like Christchurch, Wellington that is prone to earthquakes, or other coastal parts of New Zealand, as container buildings offer immense durability and sustainability. Your Intermodal Steel Building Unit or ISBU unit is sure to impress your insurance provider, due to its excellent safety and fire ranking. Therefore, don’t neglect to inform your insurance provider that it is an ISBU or Intermodal Steel Building Unit.

There are many advantages to purchasing a container due its adaptability and functionality.

Reasons why Shipping Containers are a Better Alternative to Traditional Modular Structures

Thursday, September 01, 2016

Shipping containers are recycled and used in various innovative ways. Recycled shipping containers have transformed from the simple, durable box to creative designs. Are you contemplating as to whether shipping containers are a viable option in comparison to traditional modular buildings? Listed below are reasons why shipping containers are a more feasible option.

1.Safety

Shipping containers are made out of corrugated steel that can withstand being hauled onto ships and transported all over the world. It is unbelievably difficult to break into, therefore the most secure working space in the market.

2.Sturdy

Shipping containers have a lifespan of about 25 years on average and is still salvageable afterwards. It is highly unlikely that you possess a capital asset that has longevity and is still functional in 25 years time. The bonus is that it is relatively easy to maintain.

3.Weather-proof, Water-tight and Vermin proof

Storage containers constructed to ISO standards are designed to withstand severe weather conditions to safeguard valuable cargo they transport across the oceans. If you are looking for a durable structure, that can withstand the elements and keep rodents at bay; container structures will do the job.

4.Suitable Logistically

Due to developments in the use of intelligent logistics, shipping containers are inherently advantageous to clients. They are designed to be easily transportable via rail, truck, air or sea. Manufacturers are also incorporated logistics handling aspects in container design. In so doing, these durable structures are accessible to haul, shift and stack.

5.Constructed to dispatch

Expediting freight is the norm in the modular construction business and lasting; steel shipping containers provide several distinctive advantages in comparison to traditional modular structures. Here are a few examples:,

•Temporary, compact structures that are mobile

•Relatively easy and quick to install with no particular stairs, ramps, or skirting as they are positioned at ground level

•Uncomplicated and rapid turnkey electrical and plumbing connected onsite.

•Fitted foundations, therefore, no pre-installation or advance work is needed.

6.Stackable

Shipping containers are designed and engineered to cart heavy loads and stacked in towering columns. They have standard height and length measurements, therefore, offer modular elements. If you have limited space, they are an ideal solution for a compact footprint.

7.Customisable

At SEA Containers NZ we work in collaboration with a committed team who specialise in modifying and customising containers. We merged our talents and combined have considerable engineering and fabrication skills that allow us to offer a nearly limitless range of shipping container modifications and container solutions. Shipping Containers used as Urban Farms

Friday, August 26, 2016

Urban farming is a growing trend and is gaining popularity all over the world. Did you ever imagine farming taking place in a densely populated urban area? Is this the farm of the future? Is it a matter of “before you think outside the box, think inside of it?” Start-up Urban farms in the U.S. did just that. Daniel Kuenzi, an entrepreneur from Washington DC., is transforming derelict shipping containers into freight farms. Not only is he repurposing the surplus containers stacked in ports all over the world, but he is also giving momentum to fresh food grown locally. Let’s take a glimpse inside an Urban Farm and find out what the hype is all about.

Urban Farms – Their mission

According to the article posted in The Australian’s Business Review, The US. Food Tech Urban Farm exhibited the brussel sprouts nurtured and grown in recycled shipping containers at the Collison technology conference in Las Vegas. Caroline Katsiroubas of Freight Farms stated that;“Our mission is to create a more connected and sustainable food system.” “Everyone wants to be more, local, know where their food comes from and has a relationship with people growing their food.”

Urban farms offer freshly picked and reasonably priced vegetables and fruit. They bring the best produce to you in a used container that is highly engineered and equipped to allow crops to thrive and grow in your local community or just about anywhere.

Cultivating produce in recycled shipping containers. Where did the idea originate from?

Shipping containers are durable, versatile and stackable and can be relocated just about anywhere. Due to the abundance of unused shipping containers, it can be refurbished or recycled at a reasonable cost. As opposed to the traditional greenhouse construction, shipping containers gives you the flexibility to have a farm up and running in a shorter space of time. You can install and retrofit these containers within weeks rather waiting months or years it takes with its traditional counterpart.

Hydroponic method of cultivating crops:

Each of these farms uses the newest indoor agricultural techniques. These containers are installed with equipment to control carbon dioxide levels, temperature, nutrients and air flow in the water to nurture the crops.

The nutrients required by plants are water-fed through the artificial soil. The outcome is a remarkably higher yield in a shorter period than traditional production methods. According to Katsiroubes, it also uses 90 percent less water. Moreover, there is an application that allows container farms to be controlled and monitored from further afield.

These insulated shipping containers are modified to produce an optimum environment for nurturing and growing crops. In the future, with further advances can provide a container that is more energy efficient and ultimately become self-sufficient.

Restaurants use fresh, high-quality ingredients, ready to use. Urban Farmers can tap into the market and choose to grow crops that are in demand. They have the added advantage as the weather, climate and soil are not of concern.
